Houmas House Plantation and Gardens

Darrow, Louisiana

Located 70 miles from New Orleans in Darrow, Houmas House Plantation is named in honor of the indigenous Houma Indians that occupied this region of Southeast Louisiana.

At its apex Houmas House was the largest plantation holding in North and South America with 300,000 acres and was the largest producer of sugar, lending it the nickname "Sugar Palace". The grounds and mansion have been the site for numerous movies and projects including the 1967 film "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" starring Bette Davis. Acquired in the spring of 2003 by businessman and preservationist Kevin Kelly, the plantation has been lovingly restored and pays homage the its former sugar barons. The Greek Revival mansion sits on 38 acres which includes 12 acres of manicured gardens.

Today the Houmas House has reclaimed its position as the "Crown Jewel of River Road" and is a popular destination for tourists, weddings and film projects. Future proposed projects include an 88 room hotel, 17 guest cottages and an historical exhibit of life along the "Mighty Mississippi".
